Researcher Superpowers: What You Have That the World Needs
You spent years becoming one of the most rigorous thinkers on the planet. That training is worth far more outside academia than the job market suggests. The question isn't whether you have something to offer. It's whether you can see it.

The Invisible Asset Problem
When researchers think about starting a business or building a career outside academia, they often begin by listing what they lack. They don’t have business training. They don’t know how to sell. They’ve never managed a profit and loss. They find accounting confusing and marketing uncomfortable.
This is exactly the wrong starting point.
The right starting point is an honest inventory of what years of rigorous scientific training have actually given you. Not your publication list. Not your h-index. The underlying capabilities that produced those things, and that transfer far beyond the context in which they were developed.
Most researchers undervalue this inventory by a significant margin. The market, in many domains, does not.
Your Superpowers: A Field Guide
These are not soft skills. They are hard-won cognitive and professional capabilities that most people in business do not have and cannot easily acquire.
Superpower 1: Comfort with Uncertainty
You have spent years working in conditions of deep uncertainty. You don’t know if the experiment will work. You don’t know if the model captures the right dynamics. You don’t know if the finding will replicate. You publish anyway. You iterate anyway. You design the next experiment despite not knowing the answer to the last one.
This is extraordinarily rare in business contexts. Most people in organisations are deeply uncomfortable with uncertainty and work hard to avoid decisions that don’t have clear answers. They want the consultant to give them certainty. They want the data to be conclusive before they act.
You know how to operate in conditions where certainty is not available and may never arrive. That is a genuine and valuable capability.
Who can see themselves here: the PhD student who ran three years of inconclusive trials before finding the signal. The postdoc who rewrote their analysis pipeline four times because the data kept revealing new complexity. The field ecologist who planned for equipment failure, weather disruption, and animal behaviour that wouldn’t cooperate.
Superpower 2: Systems Thinking
You were trained to understand complex interdependencies. You know that pulling on one variable changes others. You build models, not just descriptions. You think about feedback loops, lag effects, unintended consequences, and the gap between the map and the territory.
Most business problems are systems problems. A company struggling with customer retention is usually experiencing a systems failure, not a surface-level marketing problem. A supply chain that keeps breaking down is exhibiting emergent behaviour, not just bad logistics. The ability to see the system, not just the symptom, is rare and valuable.
Ecologists, epidemiologists, physiologists, climate scientists, computational biologists, and economists all have versions of this training. So do chemists who think about reaction networks, and engineers who think about failure modes. The domain differs. The underlying skill transfers.
Who can see themselves here: the epidemiologist who modelled disease transmission across populations. The ecologist who mapped trophic cascades. The systems biologist who built regulatory network models. The computational researcher who designed simulations of complex adaptive systems.
Superpower 3: Deep Domain Knowledge
You know something in extraordinary depth. Not Wikipedia depth. Not “I read a book about it” depth. You have read thousands of papers, argued with reviewers who also read thousands of papers, and been wrong enough times to know the edges of your knowledge with precision.
That depth is genuinely scarce. Companies pay significant amounts of money to access it, often through expensive consultants who have considerably less of it than you do.
The challenge is that deep domain knowledge can feel ordinary to the person who has it. You assume that other people also know this. They don’t. What feels like basic background to you is often the specific insight a company has been looking for.
Who can see themselves here: the genomicist who knows the current state of long-read sequencing better than any product manager at the companies selling it. The immunologist who understands the failure modes of CAR-T therapy that aren’t yet in the literature. The statistician who can see methodological problems in published studies before the retractions appear.
Superpower 4: Evidence Evaluation
You were trained to ask: how do we know this? What’s the study design? What are the confounders? Is the effect size meaningful or just statistically significant? What would change my mind?
This is the foundation of good decision-making in any domain. Most organisations make decisions based on intuition, precedent, or whoever spoke last and most confidently in the meeting. The ability to evaluate evidence systematically, identify what’s missing, and hold appropriate uncertainty is not common and is not easily trained.
In a world flooded with claims, data, and competing narratives, the person who can tell good evidence from bad evidence is increasingly valuable.
Who can see themselves here: anyone who has ever reviewed a paper, designed a controlled experiment, or argued with a supervisor about appropriate statistical tests. That’s almost every researcher reading this.
Superpower 5: Synthesis and Communication
You wrote papers. You gave talks to audiences ranging from specialists who knew more than you to lay audiences who knew nothing. You wrote grant applications that had to make a compelling case under severe word limits. You supervised students and had to explain complex things simply enough that someone new could act on them.
The ability to take a large, complex body of information and synthesise it into something clear, honest, and actionable is a skill that organisations will pay for directly: through consulting reports, strategic reviews, literature syntheses, expert testimony, regulatory submissions, and technical communication.
You may not think of yourself as a writer or communicator. But compared to the average business professional, you almost certainly are one.
Who can see themselves here: anyone who has written a thesis, lit review, or grant application. Anyone who has presented at a conference and taken questions from hostile reviewers. Anyone who has taught undergraduates and had to find five different ways to explain the same concept.
Superpower 6: Learning New Fields Quickly
Your training taught you how to enter a new literature, identify the key papers, understand the methodological debates, and form a defensible view in weeks rather than months. You do this every time you start a new project, collaborate across disciplines, or review outside your area.
This meta-skill, learning how to learn fast and rigorously, is one of the most transferable things a research career produces. It means you can add genuine value in adjacent domains without being a specialist in them. It means you can become useful to clients in industries you’ve never worked in before, faster than they expect.
Who can see themselves here: anyone who has done interdisciplinary work, collaborated across departments, picked up a new statistical method under deadline, or reviewed a paper in an adjacent field and somehow managed to add value.
Addressing the Blind Spots
Every researcher we’ve worked with names the same set of gaps: accounting, legal, sales, marketing, HR, and “business strategy.” These feel like disqualifying deficits. They are not.
The global service economy has a name for people who need these capabilities but don’t want to build them in-house: it calls them clients. Almost all of these gaps can be addressed through partnerships, collaborations, and specialist services, most of which are cheaper and more effective than you expect.
Accounting and finance. A bookkeeper and a good accounting platform (Xero, QuickBooks) handles the routine. A part-time CFO or financial advisor handles strategy. For early-stage work, an accountant who specialises in small businesses or research spin-outs is often the only financial support you need. Cost: often $200-500/month for basic bookkeeping.
Legal. For most early-stage ventures, a startup-friendly lawyer on retainer or a fixed-fee engagement for specific tasks is sufficient. Technology transfer offices at universities often provide early-stage IP advice. Many countries have legal aid resources for small businesses. You do not need a general counsel until you are large enough to justify one.
Sales and business development. This is the gap that frightens researchers most, and it is also the most overstated. In expert services, sales is usually just conversation: understanding what a potential client is trying to accomplish and explaining clearly whether you can help. The researchers who struggle with sales usually struggle because they’re trying to sell before they’ve listened, not because they lack sales skills. Listening carefully and asking good questions? You were trained for that.
Marketing. For expert services and consulting, the most effective marketing is usually publishing: writing about what you know in ways that demonstrate your thinking to people who might need it. A blog, a newsletter, a conference talk, a co-authored industry paper. You already do versions of this in academic form. The shift is in the audience and the framing, not the underlying skill.
HR and people management. Early-stage: you probably don’t need HR. As you grow: fractional HR consultants, employer-of-record services, and good employment templates handle most of what early-stage companies need. This scales with the business; it doesn’t need to exist before the business does.
Strategy. Advisory boards, mentors, peer networks, and experienced collaborators all provide strategic input without requiring you to become a strategist yourself. This is exactly the function that workshops like this one are designed to start building.
The pattern is the same across all of these: the gap is real, but it is a partnership problem, not a personal development problem. You do not need to become good at accounting. You need to find a good accountant.
The Global Service Economy Question
Here is the structural reality that most researchers haven’t fully internalised:
In 2026, the global service economy means that your clients do not need to be in your city, or your country. A bioinformatician in Wellington can advise a pharmaceutical company in Boston. A statistician in Dunedin can consult for a clinical research organisation in Berlin. An ecologist in Auckland can design monitoring frameworks for conservation organisations in Southeast Asia.
The barriers to this kind of work have collapsed. Video calls, asynchronous collaboration tools, international payment platforms, and globally connected professional networks have made geography largely irrelevant to expert services.
This matters particularly for researchers in small countries. The New Zealand domestic market for specialised scientific consulting is limited. The global market is not. The question of whether to build something here is now separable from the question of whether to sell here. You can do both.
The more useful question to sit with is not “is there a market?” It is: “What would I need to believe about myself and my work for this to feel like a real possibility?”
What’s Stopping You?
This is not a rhetorical question. It is the most important question in the lesson, and it is worth answering honestly before the session.
Common genuine blockers (not excuses, actual barriers worth naming):
Identity. For many researchers, being a scientist is not what they do. It is who they are. The idea of building a business can feel like a betrayal of that identity, or a step down. If this resonates, notice it. The question isn’t whether to stop being a scientist. It’s whether science can be the foundation of something larger.
Imposter syndrome. “Who am I to charge for this?” is one of the most common things researchers say when they start thinking about consulting or commercialisation. It is almost always unfounded. The people paying for expert scientific advice are not looking for perfection. They are looking for rigour, honesty, and depth they don’t have internally.
Stability and risk. Academic positions, even insecure postdoc positions, come with infrastructure: a desk, a computer, an institution behind your email address, colleagues, and a salary (small as it may be). Building something new means giving up some of that infrastructure before the replacement exists. This is a real trade-off, not a weakness.
Not knowing where to start. This is the most solvable blocker of all. It looks overwhelming from a distance and becomes manageable when broken into specific next steps. That is partly what this programme is for.
Visa and immigration status. For international researchers in New Zealand, and in many other countries, work visa conditions may restrict independent consulting or business activities. This is a real constraint and worth getting specific legal advice on before making any commitments. It is also often more flexible than people assume.
Partner and family expectations. Building something new affects the people around you. This is worth naming, not minimising.
Reflection Prompts
Come to the session having thought about all three. You won’t be asked to share anything you don’t want to share.
- Which of the superpowers described above felt most like you? Which felt least like you, and why?
- What is the real blocker? Not the polite answer. The one you’d tell a close friend at 11pm after two glasses of wine.
- Finish this sentence: “If I knew it would work, I would…”
Session
Facilitator guide. 60 minutes. This session is more personal than most. Create enough psychological safety that people can be honest.
Before You Begin
This session works differently from the others. The goal is not to reach a conclusion. It is to help each participant see themselves more clearly and develop a more accurate picture of what they have to offer.
Ground rule worth stating aloud: nothing shared in the session leaves the room. People will say things they haven’t said to their supervisors or colleagues. That’s the point.
Discussion 1: The Superpower Inventory (15 min)
Pairs. Then share back.
Ask each person to tell their partner about a moment in their research where they did something that, looking back, required a genuinely unusual skill. Not the result. The capability it took.
This is harder than it sounds. Researchers tend to describe outputs (published a paper, collected the data) rather than capabilities (synthesised conflicting literature under time pressure, convinced a hostile reviewer that the methodology was sound). Prompt partners to push for the underlying skill, not the achievement.
After 8 minutes, ask: who heard something from their partner that surprised them? What was it?
This exercise frequently surfaces capabilities people hadn’t named, especially around synthesis, communication, navigating complexity, and persistence under ambiguity.
Discussion 2: The Deficit Reframe (10 min)
Plenary.
Ask the group to call out their biggest perceived gaps: the things they feel they’d need to learn before they could build something. Write them on the whiteboard.
The list will almost always include: accounting, sales, marketing, legal, and “business stuff.”
Then ask: for each item on this list, who is already paid to do this professionally? Could you hire, partner with, or collaborate with that person rather than becoming them?
The point is not to dismiss the gaps. It is to reframe them as partnership opportunities rather than personal development requirements. A researcher who knows their superpower and surrounds themselves with people who have complementary skills is a much more viable starting point than a researcher who tries to become competent at everything before starting.
Discussion 3: The Visibility Exercise (15 min)
Small groups of 3-4.
Prompt: “Who in the world, outside your university, would pay to access what you know, and what would they be trying to accomplish when they came looking?”
This is harder than it sounds. Push groups to be specific: not “pharma companies” but “early-stage genomics companies trying to understand off-target effects of CRISPR edits.” Not “government agencies” but “environmental regulators who need to interpret metagenomic data from water samples and don’t have the internal expertise.”
The specificity matters. Vague potential customers are not customers. Specific potential customers with specific problems are the beginning of a real conversation.
Share-back: one specific potential customer per group, described in two sentences.
Discussion 4: The Blocker Circle (10 min)
This is the most personal part of the session. Use your judgment about how much to push.
Ask each person to name, out loud or in writing, the real thing stopping them. Not the polite version. Remind the group of the ground rule.
Common patterns to gently surface if they don’t emerge naturally:
“I don’t know if my work is good enough.” Probe: good enough compared to what? Who gets to decide? What evidence would change your view?
“I’d have to leave academia and I’m not ready.” Probe: does building something outside academia require leaving? Or could it coexist, at least initially?
“My supervisor/PI/department wouldn’t support it.” Probe: is this actually true? Have you asked? And whose permission do you actually need?
“I don’t know where to start.” This is usually honest and almost always solvable. Acknowledge it and name the challenge. The following sessions address it directly.
Discussion 5: The 2026 Question (10 min)
Plenary close.
Put this on the screen or whiteboard:
“In 2026, with remote work normalised and global platforms for expert services widely available, what would have to be true for a researcher with your specific expertise to build a viable, satisfying income doing work they love, without leaving New Zealand?”
Give people two minutes to write an answer individually, then open it up.
This question is designed to surface both the possibilities and the remaining genuine constraints. Some constraints are structural and real (visa status, family obligations, specific market conditions). Others are assumptions that haven’t been tested. The goal of the discussion is to tell them apart.
Close with: “Your challenge this week asks you to write a superpower statement and name one potential customer. Those two things together are the beginning of a pitch. Not a finished one. A beginning.”
Challenge (~50 min)
This challenge is personal and cumulative. It feeds into your 90-day plan at the end of Day 2.
Part 1: Your Superpower Statement (15 min)
Write a one-paragraph description of your core research superpower. Not your CV. Not your publication list. The underlying capability that your research training has given you that most people don’t have.
A useful structure:
“I am unusually good at [capability], developed through [specific experience]. This means I can [concrete thing you can do for someone] in ways that people without this background typically can’t.”
Write at least two drafts. The first will probably sound like an academic bio. The second should sound like something you’d say to a smart non-scientist friend who just asked what you’re good at.
Examples to calibrate against:
“I am unusually good at finding patterns in messy, high-dimensional biological data, developed through six years of building analytical pipelines for whole-genome sequencing studies. This means I can help companies make sense of genomic datasets that their bioinformatics teams are struggling with, in weeks rather than months.”
“I am unusually good at synthesising conflicting evidence from large, methodologically diverse literatures, developed through systematic reviews and meta-analyses in environmental toxicology. This means I can give companies and regulators a reliable picture of what the science actually shows on contested questions, faster and more rigorously than they could build internally.”
“I am unusually good at designing experiments that isolate causal effects in complex systems, developed through a decade of field ecology research where controls are impossible and confounders are everywhere. This means I can help organisations design evaluations and studies that produce credible results rather than artefacts.”
Part 2: The Blind Spot Audit (10 min)
List the three gaps that feel most significant to you (the things you’d need to build or find before you could offer your superpower commercially).
For each gap, answer: who already does this professionally? Could you hire, partner with, or collaborate with them?
This is not about solving the gaps today. It’s about reframing them as a partnership map rather than a to-do list.
Part 3: One Customer (15 min)
Describe one specific potential customer for your superpower. Be as specific as you can:
- What kind of organisation are they? (Not “biotech.” A small biotech company developing RNA therapeutics that has just moved into clinical trials and doesn’t have the internal bioinformatics capacity to handle the data they’re generating.)
- What are they trying to accomplish?
- What problem does your superpower solve for them?
- Why can’t they solve it internally or with a generic consultant?
If you can’t name a real organisation, name the type in the same level of detail.
Part 4: The Blocker (5 min)
Write one honest paragraph about what is actually stopping you. The real version, not the polite one. You don’t have to share this with anyone. But naming it clearly is the precondition for addressing it.
Part 5: The Sentence (5 min)
Complete this sentence:
“If I knew it would work, I would …”

Key Concepts Reference
Superpower: a capability developed through rigorous training that is scarce in the broader market and valuable to people who need it. Distinct from a skill (narrower, more learnable) and from domain knowledge (content rather than capability).
Complementary partnerships: collaborations with people whose skills address your gaps, rather than attempting to develop those skills yourself. The most effective early-stage businesses are usually built on complementary partnerships rather than solo capability development.
Expert services: a business model in which the core product is knowledge, judgment, and expertise rather than a physical good or a software product. The researcher’s natural domain. Sold through consulting, advisory roles, research partnerships, reports, training, and expert testimony.
Imposter syndrome: the persistent, usually unfounded belief that one’s competence is insufficient for the task at hand, combined with fear of being exposed as a fraud. Exceptionally common among high-achieving people, including researchers. Worth naming because it shapes decisions in ways that aren’t usually visible.
Niche: a specific, well-defined market segment where your particular combination of expertise, experience, and approach creates value that generalists cannot match. Counter-intuitively, a narrower niche usually produces more business than a broad one, because it makes you the obvious answer to a specific question rather than one of many answers to a general one.
